Summary : Mr Wells died on 12 December 2018 at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Murdoch, from metastatic oesophageal neuroendocrine carcinoma. He was a sentenced prisoner at the time of his death at Casuarina Prison and so accordingly, he was a ‘person held in care’ with respect to the Coroner’s Act 1996 (WA) in which a coronial inquest is mandatory. Mr Wells was 61 years of age when he died.
The inquest focused on the medical care provided to Mr Wells throughout his 14 year incarceration, particularly after being diagnosed with his oesophageal cancer in April 2018.
After reviewing all the evidence, the coroner was satisfied with the supervision, treatment and care Mr Wells was provided while in the custody of the then Department of Corrective Services.
The coroner found Mr Wells’ death is consistent with Natural Causes.
