Summary : On 17 November 1972 Gloria Anne McCarthy (Gloria) and her two older brothers went to swim on the beach at One Arm Point. A short time later her mother went to check on her children and could not locate Gloria. The local community conducted an immediate and thorough search of the area. She was never seen again or any trace of her located. Gloria was 22 months of age.

Derby Police received a message from One Arm Point via RFDS on 17 November 1972 that Gloria was missing and contacted the Broome District Office to advise of her disappearance. An extensive search both by land and sea was conducted with an area of approximately a ten mile radius from the beach outside the community.

The Coroner was satisfied beyond all reasonable doubt that Gloria died on 17 November 1972 while on the beach and its surrounds some time during the middle of the day. The Coroner observed Gloria was a toddler and although familiar with her environment would not, at that age, have been aware of the dangers inherent in her environment.

The Coroner was unable to determine exactly how death occurred but found death occurred by way of Misadventure.
