Inquest into the Death of Sajidu RAHMAN

Summary : The deceased was 51 years of age at the time of his death. He had diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition. He took tablets every day for the diabetes and high blood pressure, and had heart medication to use when needed. 

In April 2013 the deceased and his family travelled from Myanmar to Indonesia, from where they travelled by boat to Australia in May 2013. 

On the journey to Australia, the deceased  was unable to take his medication because he could not get to his luggage.  He became increasingly unwell. On the fourth day of the journey, the boat was intercepted by a Royal Navy vessel and the deceased and his family were taken on board. They were taken to Christmas Island where they disembarked and were processed on the jetty and moved to a detention centre.

At the detention centre, the deceased was seen by a doctor who assessed the deceased as looking healthy but requiring medication for diabetes. The doctor had not been made aware of the deceased’s heart condition. After the consultation, the deceased re-joined his family and had something to eat and drink. He told his family that he was not feeling well and that he was going to the toilet. The deceased later collapsed and stopped breathing in another part of the detention centre. Medical assistance was immediately provided and the deceased was taken to the Christmas Island Hospital, but he could not be revived. 

The Coroner found that the deceased died on 1 June 2013 at Phosphate Hill Detention Centre on Christmas Island from ischaemic heart disease with myocarditis and that death occurred by way of natural causes.

The Coroner found that the treatment and care provided to the deceased was appropriate in the relevant circumstances.
