Summary : The deceased died on 11 March 2012 at his home. His body was discovered by his flatmate and police officers who were in the street for another matter were alerted. Police tried to resuscitate the deceased, without success.

The focus of the inquest was to explore the initial concerns by police that the circumstances of the death were suspicious and to explore some of the investigation processes used.

The deceased’s death was assessed initially by police investigators as possibly being suspicious due to a number of factors. These were primarily a concern that the ligature found at the scene was inconsistent with marks around the deceased’s neck and also concerns about the behaviour of the deceased’s flatmate prior to, and following, the death of the deceased.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased eventually determined that, despite their initial concerns, there was no evidence of criminality involved in the death of the deceased. This is particularly the case in relation to the nature of the ligature which the deceased used.

The Coroner was satisfied the deceased was intoxicated and depressed when he fashioned a ligature out of a drawstring and a sarong and hanged himself with the intention to take his life.

The Coroner found the deceased died as a result of ligature compression of the neck (hanging) and that his death occurred by way of suicide.
