Summary

Ian Daniel Arthur Gray (Ian) was last confirmed to be alive on 24 July 2022. He left his mother’s home in Green Head, Western Australia to go out fishing on his boat. He was reported missing at 6:18 pm on 24 July 2022, when he did not return to his mother’s home.

A comprehensive land, sea and aerial search was immediately commenced for Ian between 24 July 2022 and 27 July 2022, but no sign of Ian or his boat was found, and the search was terminated on 27 July 2022 after expert advice was provided advising that there was no prospect of Ian being found alive after that time.

At the conclusion of the inquest, the Coroner indicated that the search efforts for Ian were of a very high standard. The Coroner was satisfied beyond all reasonable doubt that Ian is deceased, and died on or about 24 July 2022 in the waters of the Indian Ocean off South Bay, Green Head. The Coroner concluded that Ian died after his boat came apart as a result of being swamped by waves, or he lost control of his boat and overturned in rough seas, resulting in his accidental death.
