The Role of the Coroner
The coronial system in Western Australia is overseen by the State Coroner. The State Coroner is assisted by the Deputy State Coroner and two Coroners. In regional areas, Coroners sit as Magistrates in Local Courts around Western Australia.
The Coroner is required by law to investigate sudden, unexpected and unnatural deaths to determine the identity, date, place, circumstances, and medical cause of death. In some cases, the Coroner can make recommendations following an inquest. Such recommendations aim to improve public safety and prevent future deaths.
